Carl Nelson

In Nelson’s first career he rose from recruit to highly decorated U.S. Navy captain. During a thirty-three year career he served four tours of duty in the Vietnam War, many demanding staff positions, and commanded five combat organizations in including three at sea and two on the ground. His sea commands included the guided missile cruiser, U.S.S. Worden CG-18, the frigate, U.S.S. Cook FF 1083, and he fleet towing and salvage ship, U.S.S. Cocopa ATF 101. His ground commands were as Senior Advisor to the commander of combat riverine operations in the Rung Sat Special Zone (RSSZ) and Naval Logistics Base, Nha Be.  In 1980, while CO of Worden, the crew saved over 150 “boat people” from the ocean.

Carl Nelson’s second career has been as a writer. It has spanned thirty years. During that time he has published poetry, eight works of nonfiction, four novels, and more than fifty short stories, articles, and technical papers. He is a member of the Authors Guild of America, Dramatists Guild, PEN USA, and has twice served as president of the San Diego Writers/Editors Guild.

Dr. Nelson is a graduate of Annapolis and holds a doctorate earned at Aliant/USIU in international business (finance and trade) and a Master of Science degree in economics/systems analysis. He was a professor of international business at the California School of International Management (CSIM) and has been awarded that school’s Distinguished Educator Award.
