Joseph Szalay

Joe was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Szalay and Julia Shimko Szalay. His parents came from Agad, Zemplain County of Hungary.

Mr. Szalay attended schools in Duquesne and worked in steel mills as an apprentice in the forge shop before being drafted into military service.
Joseph served in the 102nd (Ozark) Infantry Division during World War II where he was a division coordinator for field artillery.
He served in Germany from 1944-1945 in the Army Intelligence field because of his knowledge of the Hungarian language. During this time his rank went from Private to Chief Warrant Officer.

Joseph died in Sherman, Texas on Jan. 3, 2004
