Thomas Bien, Ph.D.

Thomas Bien, Ph.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Albuquerque, NM, where he also teaches mindfulness and meditation.  He is a summa cum laude graduate of Rutgers College.  In addition to his doctorate in psychology from the University of New Mexico, he also has a master’s degree in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.  He has written numerous scientific articles and book chapters in psychology, focusing especially on Buddhist psychology and practice.  He is the author of:  Mindful Recovery: A Spiritual Path to Healing From Addiction (Wiley, 2002), Finding the Center Within: The Healing Way of Mindfulness Meditation (Wiley, 2003), and Mindful Therapy: A Guide for Therapists and Helping Professionals (Wisdom, 2006).  With Steven Hick, Ph.D., he is co-editor of Mindfulness and the Therapeutic Relationship, (Guilford, 2007).  His latest work is The Buddha’s Way of Happiness: Healing Sorrow, Transforming Negative Emotion & Finding Well-Being in the Present Moment (New Harbinger, 2011).  Dr. Bien speaks internationally.  His work lies at the forefront of integrating mindfulness with psychological practice.
