Cliff Guilliams

Cliff Guilliams

Guilliams, a native of Evansville, Indiana, became a racing fan during his high school days, when he and his friends made frequent outings to Ellis Park. He also owned Thoroughbreds.

Guilliams called charts for Daily Racing Form and Equibase Company for more than 20 years. He became an Equibase chart caller in June 1998 when Daily Racing Form and Equibase merged their chart-calling teams. In addition, he was a writer for the Evansville Courier & Press and the handicapper for the Louisville Courier-Journal for races at Churchill Downs and Keeneland.

He was one of several Equibase employees to produce the Kentucky Derby (G1) chart each May, taking the lead role in composing the race comments and footnotes for each participant. A Thoroughbred named in his honor, The Cliff's Edge, won the Blue Grass S. (G1) and finished fifth as the morning-line favorite in the 2004 Kentucky Derby. The Cliff's Edge was owned by Robert La Penta and trained by Guilliams' good friend Nick Zito.

Guilliams died on March 14, 2008.
