People often ask me what the best diet for weight loss is. I tell them it’s the diet they’ll stick with for the rest of their lives. There are, of course, some guidelines everyone can follow in order to lose weight faster and to keep it off once it’s been lost. One of the best ways to Reboot Your Body is by building your diet around whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables. One of the best ways to do this is by playing a game I developed for my clients years ago. It’s called the Rainbow Challenge and it’s something your whole family will enjoy.
This is a challenge I started running periodically on my blog to encourage readers to eat more whole foods. Each week, make it a goal to eat one serving of a fruit or vegetable from every color of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, purple/blue (or purple and blue for extra credit). Of course, your choices need to be healthfully prepared, but apart from that, there are no rules. A "serving" equals 1/2 cup of fruit (or one small apple, orange, pear, banana, etc.) and 3/4 cup of vegetable (or 2 cups, in the case of leafy greens). You can pick the color on the inside (such as green for kiwi) or the color on the outside (such as purple for eggplant).
This is an easy one to get kids involved with, since they love to roam the produce aisles picking out the colors of the rainbow. Scoring goes like this: 1 point per day for getting all the colors; 1 extra credit point for each day that you log a purple and a blue (in addition to all other colors); 1 extra credit point for each day where at least three of your servings were from vegetables. A one-week score of 10 or more puts you in the “Winner” category, 15 or more makes you a “Champ” and a score of 20 or 21 gives you “Leprechaun” status, since you’ve obviously found gold at the end of the rainbow!
